So are my chances of getting into grad school shot because of one bad grade in undergrad?

I have plans of going into grad school, whether its law school or a business school or maybe simply something in IT. My undergrad gpa was a 3.0, close to 3.1. However, my last semester, I took a rather difficult course (for my major) and got a D. It’s been two years since I’ve been out of school. Now I was told that that ONE D is going to make it EXTREMELY difficult for me to get into grad school…is that true? Would I have to go back and retake that class again to better my gpa and help boost up that bad grade? Please help…thanks!

If one 3 credit course that you received a D in lowered your score to a 3.0, then chances are you were probably around a 3.3 before, assuming you were an average B student. One letter grade wont be the death of your application however. Universities look at your GRE/GMAT/LSAT scores, your recommendation letters, and your personal statements.

Instead of retaking that course, try to get excellent grades in the rest of what is asked from you (referring to GRE and the like.)

With a 3.0 you can get into a lot of universities, even Ivy League, as long as the rest is really good. The fact that you have been working for the last 2 years will also work to your benefit since many schools are looking for work experience before applying for a masters.

I doubt it.

Most schools take a combo of your GMAT / GRE and undergrad GPA. For highly competitve schools the 3.1 GPA is going to present some problems more than one class.

I’d go ahead and apply. They’ll take anybody’s money since they don’t have to guarantee anybody a job after you’re done with grad school.

I’m not 100% positive I technically qualified to be in grad school with the grades in my major but I was still admitted.
