Walden University?

Just wondering if anyone has had experience, positive or negative, with Walden University’s online Masters program. I’m interested in the Nursing Education track but I’d love answers from anyone who’s taken courses through them! Thanks!

A manager in an adult literacy program where I used to work did her masters through Walden. She was very positive about the experience. As someone else remarked, no tests, but lots of papers and projects, which both help you learn and test what you know and can articulate better than an exam, anyway. And even face-to-face grad courses rely much less on tests than do undergrad courses.

The only negative aspect (as far as I’m concerned — she didn’t find this negative at all) was that she was required to physically go to Walden for two weeks each summer. That was all the vacation time she got, and she had to spend it there, at the time they set up. I would have been annoyed, but she really liked meeting everyone face to face and enjoyed the contact.

I haven’t taken courses personally, but I’ve heard a lot about them. For instance, they don’t do a lot of testing, just rely on a lot of written papers, which you have to send in. I wouldn’t recommend it for nursing. If it were a business class, maybe, but I’ve heard some employers don’t give send-away colleges (Walden and others) degrees the same weight as colleges you actually attend in person because there is so little testing.

I would recommend you try a local college or university, which may offer telecourses or online courses, with fewer trips to campus.

I agree with other posters who say try a local university or at least a school that has been around for a long time (mine has been around since the late 1800’s) and I attend their online school.
