Usually biomedical devices like disposables such as syringes, giving and taking sets, anesthetic devices, masks, critical disposables like oxygenators, cardiotomy reservoirs, and implants have to be supplied sterile by the manufacturer.
The method of sterilization can vary. Wet steam, dry heat, EO gas, and radiation are the preferred methods. The outer most packaging is stored in non-sterile conditions. It is also handled by non-sterile hands.
The packaging should stand all sterilization conditions, storage and handling without compromising the sterility of the contents. The material should be biocompatible and not leach undesirable chemicals into the product. It should not shred or shed particles.
Biomedical paper such as Tyvek from Dupont match all these criteria.
