Your GPA isn’t really high enough to get your into a top school but it’s high enough that some colleges will accept you. It helps if you were involved in activities outside of class. Find some schools that interest you, visit them, ask questions, do some research and find out what your chances are of getting in. Some people prefer to go to a community college and transfer and have found that the best route for them.

Just because you are poor doesn’t mean that college is free. Be sure to fill out the FAFSA. You can find the form online and fill it out online. It can get a little complex but it will determine whether you qualify for a grant or loan from the government. Generally people just qualify for loans unless there are 2 or more other siblings or parents going full time in college as well. You can fill out the FAFSA as early as January and the sooner you do it the better. Fill it out the year you plan to attend college. For example, if you want to attend college starting the fall of 2009 then fill it out anytime from January 2009 through the spring of 2009. You have a better chance of getting scholarships and grants if your GPA is higher. Scholarships are very competative. Just because you don’t have a lot of money doesn’t mean you get a free ride. Look on the internet and ask your school about scholarships and grants offered in your state and see if you qualify. Fill out the applications for them as soon as you can. Even if it’s for a small amount of money, the effort can be worth it. Every little bit helps.

Most schools will probably accept you however it will not be free just because you are poor. You can get loans to cover your classes but not your books or your gas to get to school which can be expensive. You will also need to buy a student ID card and a few other items that will be required by teachers. Perhaps you know of an agency that will pay for that. I do know there is help if you are disabled but if you are just poor and need money you will need to apply for some grants ahead of time before you ever get in college to cover the extra expenses, or take out a loan. Everything isn’t free but the most expensive part is covered. Like I said though, the books and extra supplies can run several hundred up to several thousand depending on how long you are in school. Again you can buy your books used also or purchase them at Amazon.com or somewhere if you know ahead of time what they will be a whole lot cheaper.
