Should I claim credit hours from my AP Computer Science?

Since college CS course is taught in C++, but high school CS course is taught in Java. I’m going to University of Houston btw.

C++ and Java have some similar structures. If I were you, I will take the course. There are 2 advantages: (1) you have extra computer language on your resume; (2) you can get a good grade to bring up your GPA without taking much of your time. The beautiful thing is that you probably don’t have to pay for the course. Once you hit certain number of credit for full time, taking an extra course doesn’t cost you except maybe the book. Otherwise, if you claim credits, you will have to take something else to make up those credits.

If you’re a CS major or plan to take additional CS courses outside your major, you should definitely take the course – you don’t want to be learning C++ syntax plus new techniques in programming at the same time in the more advanced courses. If you’re majoring in some other science or engineering subject where you might do a decent bit of programming, you should probably take it. If you’re going to be a humanities student and never program again, you should probably just take the credits.
