Should I become a Lawyer?

I’m debating between a few ocupation choices right now…. One is being a vet, one is being a journalist/author and the other is law.

The reason I’m considering law is because I love to argue…It is one of the best feelings to be able agrue effectively and prove your point… I also love essay writing (which I’ve been told might mean that you’d make a good lawyer.) I’m 18 and I need to decide what I’m doing next year.

I think I’d like law but my dad says that depending on what field you pick it could be boring…

My questions are to lawyers, do you think I have the traits of a good lawyer? What undergrad degrees can you choose from and what field of law is the most intresting?

Whether or not law is boring is subjective. I’m studying law and find Constitutional Law and Tax Law very dry, but absolutely love Medical Law and Defamation Law. To the contrary, one of my friends loves Tax Law and thinks Defamation Law is stupid!

The good thing about law is that there are so many different areas to branch into – there’s criminal, torts, defamation, medical, administrative, international, tax, media, human rights, property, contract, constitutional…and the list goes on! In Australia a law degree is done over 4 – 5 years so all students study each area to get a taste of what they may like to specialise in come their final years.

Another thing to consider is just because you have a law degree it doesn’t mean that you have to become a lawyer. Law graduates are sought after in many professions as they have high analytical skills, good communication and reasoning skills and so forth. Many people graduate and then work in a related field such as politics.

To suceed in law school you need to be good at, and enjoy reading – you will spend most of your time reading! You also need to be persuasive – so your love of arguing is good, analytical and of course have a high level of communication skills – both written and verbal.

It is important to note that getting a law degree is one on the hardest paths you could take, opposed to some other degrees, you really need to have passion or it would be hell! But if you truly enjoy it, then it’s definitely a good path to take.

You’ve got plenty of time to decide about law school, honestly. Just about every major will translate well into a law degree, so even if you don’t go “pre-law” it doesn’t really matter. We had pre-law, history, music, economics, biochemistry, english, and even more in my law school class. What matters is the ability to think critically, look at topics from many points of view, defend a point of view you may not actually agree with, analyze writing, and apply concepts to new fact patterns.

If you’re 18, then you’re either going into your first year of college or your second, right? Pick a field that interests you, and run with it. Law school is not degree-determinate, and will always be there.

Well, yeah. That applies to every job. You pick the field you’re interested in. What’s interesting to me in my legal career is employee benefits and retirement plans, which make most people weep from boredom. My best friend from law school loves criminal litigation, which I loathe. It depends on you.

Sure, paralegals can end up attorneys, however they have to pass to legislation tuition. There was some thing known as “studying for the legislation” that you would do at the external, however I do not believe you’ll do this anymore.
