Should I apply Early Decision?

My top choice school is Columbia, they accept about 10% of applicants, but with ED it’s more like 39%. SO I know my chances, like everyone else’s are much better going early. The problem with early is it’s binding and I wouldn’t get to review financial aid packages from other schools. I don’t need that much money but it would be nice to know which school is giving most. So I guess I’m asking are colleges usually more generous with ED students? Or should I just take the financial risk and apply early, or take the admission risk and apply regular? (I’m not stupid, I know my chances are incredibly slim either way)

I believe that applying ED would be the best case if you are truly interested in that school. You can get out of binding with a small fee, so that isn’t a problem, but just make sure to look at all of your options. Apply to at least 3 schools just in case.

So, I say:

Apply early.

If Columbia is your first choice and you know you’re chances of getting in are borderline, then I would apply early decision. You say that you need some money, so the hope is that you can get it in other ways, primarily scholarships. And in all fairness, if you’re applying to Columbia in the first place, you’re not dumb, so you’re chances of winning multiple scholarships is highly probable.

There is of course, early action, which I believe Columbia does offer. As you probably know, this is not binding, and would allow you to review the financial packages from other schools.

In the event that you do decide to apply early action, it is imperative that you check to make sure you’re not applying restricted early action. This means that you are in fact binded to the school, and if you withdrawal yourself, it will be reported to other school and reflect negatively on your chances of getting into any school. (as will withdrawaling yourself from acceptence from early decision. Even if you do have to pay a fee).

One problem with early decision is that if you do get in, schools usually don’t offer you any scholarships because you’re already coming to their school so you have to pay and they’ll just give that money to someone else. It can increase your chances of getting in though. You can get scholarships other ways though. Go to your local library and in the non-fiction section there’s a section for higher education. They have big books that list a ton of scholarships, who qualifies, and how you can apply.
