Should I and can I pursue a Masters in psychology and an MBA at the same time?

my situation is this, my dream is to own my own restaurant one day. Hopefully before the age of 25, I’m a superb cook. But thats just my dream, I wanted to have a degree to fall back on incase that doesn’t work out (knock on wood). I’m 21 now, and planning ahead for my future. I want to pursue psychology but at the same time I want to gain business knowledge. Should I major in psychology and minor in business? I figured if I’m going to minor in business why not just pursue and MBA? Thank you for taking time to answer my question………

First and most important, an MBA has NOTHING to do with owning a business. Just like a degree in electrical engineering has nothing to do with wiring a house.

With that said, there are areas in an MBA that have to deal with psychology. You can study marketing with Comsumor Behavior, Game Theory, or even operations research (somewhat related). Do you know what you would do with the MS in Psychology if the restaurant doesn’t work out? Where would you expect to get the cash for this restaurant after paying for grad school? Seems like the MBA might give you the money you need in the future.

If your dream is to own your own business then go 100% with the MBA. It will still be useful to ‘fall back on’ if your business doesn’t succeed, but will give it a hell of a lot more chance of it succeeding. Focus on reaching your goal first and then you can alway go back and do Psych out of interest later down the track. Psych is not a good one to fall back on as you will need to update your knowledge and skills anyway when you go back to it.

A major in Psych and a minor in business or even a second major in business is not a bad idea. If you go into private practice you will have the business skills to keep your practice solvent. So many people start a private practice only to find that they have no business knowledge and have to close the doors or worse, ruin their credit and spend years recovering from the debt and taxes they acrue.

Good luck!

Generally speaking, yes it’s possible. I’d even think it’s preferable to an employer to have a science degree combined with a public health degree. However, it’s important to note that the graduate program will be much more challenging if your degree pursuits are in disparate fields. Note of recommendation: Online graduate level education is a last resort. Based on my casual observations, healthcare administration seems to be one of those grossly overpopulated degree fields that will make finding related work very difficult for a degree holder.
