There are three types of degrees for school psychologists (Masters, Ed.S = Educational Specialist, and PhD. The masters is the bare minimum you need in order to get into this field and only a few states (mostly those in the midwest such as Michigan, Ohio, etc) allow you to practice with only a masters degree. The educational specialist degree is usually 30 credits beyond the bachelors degree and is recognized in most states as the entry level degree into school psycholgy (hence if you really just want to work in the school system go with this degree). The educational specialist degree is usually three to four years long. Lastly, the doctorate (phd) allows one to pursue multiple career opportunities such as being a college professor, enter private practice, and pursue other administrative positions within the school system. It also carries the title of being a Dr. which is more prestigous and facilitates advancement within the school system. Most PhDs in school psychology are designed to be completed within 5 to 6 years. So basically if you are sure that you want to just work in the school system get the educational specialist degree because they could eliminate the masters degree from being acceptable and force you to get the educational specialist degree in the future. Why go back to school ten years from now if you can get it all done now?
