A private non profit school has nonprofit status and is exempt from paying some taxes and is not out to make a profit. Normally these schools are ran by churches or other private organizations. A private for profit school is one that is making a profit and that is their main goal. This type of school has to pay all taxes. Some of these schools are also owned by large educational conglomerates and are even listed on stock exchanges. An example is Devry and the Apollo Group, which owns University of Phoenix.
