Please help! college admissions question (open to anyone)?

people make it sound like people who have a 2.8 or 2.9 gpa wont get into college or will have to go to comunity college. A 2.8 or 2.9 isn’t bad. Right? i mean it is a B or B-. i mean if you are really involved in good extra curricular activities (volunteer and clubs at the school) and i take International Baccalaureate wont I get accepted and if I get a pretty good test score on the ACTs like a 28.

and i studied abroad for a year… will that help?

and i can promise i will be at a 3.3 by the time i finish my junior year

A lot of colleges don’t care what your actual grades are, but rather they care only about your rank in class. Unfortunately, a lot of high schools have been going through serious problems with grade inflation. A 2.9 GPA from my high school when I went to it would have easily been in the top half of the class. I doubt that would be true at many high schools anymore, but if yours is one of them, then you’re fine. Certain public universities use hard fast rules on what GPAs they will accept, and you might have trouble with some of them, but otherwise you shouldn’t have trouble with moderately competitive four year schools. In general, if you’re taking IB courses and have a good ACT score, you’ll find some reasonable 4-year college that will take you.

However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that extracurriculars make up for poor grades. People vastly overrate the importance of them, probably because doing that makes it possible for them to delude themselves into thinking that there are easy and fun ways to make up for poor academic performance.

Well sure you can get into college with those grades, maybe not a really good one. But you could get into a college. But if you don’t get into the schools that you would have like to, just go to community college for 2 years, then transfer. Its just how the country is, I had a 3.56, and it didn’t look to hot next to 4.0s, 4.2s, etc. Its getting tougher to get into big state schools, more people, less slots available.

a 2.8, 2.9 out of a 4 scale is not a B. Its a C+.

But since that’s the average, then that means you’ve gotten a few D’s or F’s as well.

yeah usely what you made on your act is what they look at i go to college and i go to a community college i like it cause. there more help then the major college. teachers would take there time on you. if you think it is or would be one, i would go to a community college to bring my grade point averge up, if i was you and knowing by experiance the teacher would help you as much as they can to make sure you get there. even better.. i got a 4.0 with teachers help they do anything they can to get you there, but yeah your act score would do just fine.
