What do I need to do to become a bio-engineer?

Right now I am going to school as a medical assistant but my long term goal is going back to school to be a M.D and or a bio-engineer. I asked the local university and they you need a medical background to be a bio-engineer.

What does it take to go to school for these type of classes, how long, how much, what subjects should I be studying, what articles I should be reading and what type of employment should I expect if these goals are completed? Is there anything else I should be asking?

And most of all, is it worth it?

Bioengineering is one of the “hot fields” right now. Many engineering programs have developed cutting edge programs in this field. Three that I can think of in Southern California are UCLA, UC Riverside, and Harvey Mudd College. If you do a program like this, you will be well qualified to enter this exciting field.
