Path of a Surgeon?

I’m considering becoming a surgeon, but I’m not sure as to what path I should take. I live in North Carolina, and UNC Chapel Hill is the 2nd best ranked college in the nation for their Primary Care School of Medicine. Meanwhile, Duke is the 8th ranked in the nation for their Research School of Medicine. I was wondering which School of Medicine I would need to attend to be a surgeon; Primary Care or Research.

Primary care, BUT you have to do 2-3 years part time research as well.

You get a BS in Pre Med from an acceptable Biology or Bio-Chemistry major.

Then you do 4 years in Med School which is about 100 hours a week of work for 4 years. Pharmachology, biology, microbiology, antomy, phyisology, cutting up (disecting) cadavers and doings rounds work in the hospitals and clincs.

You have to look for a research project to join and you have to do an independent project (usually in tandem with the group research project) and get published.

Third and fouth year is mostly in the Hospitals, Clinics and Research labs. You will work holiday weekends, be on-call eveyr 8-12 weeks (that’s a 80-120 hour shift).

If you meet the criteria you get a DM or MD and then you find a hospital to intern in for 1 year, mostly in the ER and on rotation rounds.

After that you take a test for a license in the state where you will practise or resident.

Then you decide which surgery to do. There is General Surgery, the most popular. That’s tonsilecotomies, hernia repairs, gall badder removal, liver sections, hysterecotomies.

There is Throact surgery with is lungs, breast, neck and possbily heart if it’s Cardio Throactic.

There is Plastic.

Orthopedic

Nueruosugery

Vasciular Surgery

Cardio-Vascual Surgery

Sugery residents generally do 4-7 years depending on type (general is about 4-5 years).

You get a stipend of $25K or so a year (could also be room board and a smaller $8K stipend).

After you complete either Senior or Chief resident work you can apply to the Boards for a Diploma

Once you are a diplomate in the field you are job ready.

Typical Diplomate makes $200K+ a Year
