One of my parents live in California is it possible for me to apply there for college as a resident?

I live in the state of florida with my dad and my mom lives in california and i was wondering if i had to be a registered student in the state of california to apply as an in-state college student. This is my senior year and I’d really rather go to college in California rather than in Florida

All the schools I am familiar with follow a simple rule when dealing with incoming freshman, if you present a high school transcript from out of state you are automatically an out of state resident and pay out of state tuition. It’s your responsibility to prove otherwise. Check the fine print about residency at the school you want to attend. Usually they are very specific, but you may need to call to get an exact answer. Good for you for checking into this early!! Good Luck.

Unlikely. If you were on your Dad’s Florida tax return, (or if you filed one there), then you cannot be considered a California resident. If no tax return was filed, and for example, your driver’s license is CA, not FL, then you can show these documents to apply for the out of state tuition waiver.

That’s a good question. I wonder if it makes a difference whether or not you’re 18 yet. If you’re still a minor, maybe you can do it under her residency. Check with any college in California.
