My mom really wants me to go to college near home, but I want to go to new places! decide?

I want to go to an pastry school and possibly an art school…I really would like to go somewhere new. I live in Michigan.. I would like to go to New York, and England.. I cant decide..and mom wants me to go to college near home. I dont know how to choose the right one for me and tell her I want to leave, in a nice way.

I would really appreciate it if somesone, could possibly tell me a good school and/or a way to tell my mom.

I had that problem too. I ended up getting a little of both. I go to school about three and a half hours from where I grew up. It’s close enough that I can go home once in awhile, mostly during breaks, but it’s far enough away that I have my space. There are also programs at my college where you can study abroad for a semester or over the summer.

I see alot of people saying “follow your heart/dreams.” However you are in the same scenerio I was a few years back when it came time for college. I wanted to go where music was big and where I could be on my own to experience living off my own rules. My mom wanted me close to home. I was comparing a univerisity in Virginia and one in Michigan (GVSU). The end result…I stayed close to home because of one deciding factor and it wasn’t my mom. It was money. Tuition at GV is 4000 a semester and if I would have gone with the other university it would have been pushing 15-20000 a semester. All in all, don’t look at just what your heart says, but also what you can afford. If you can’t deside, get your gen eds out of the way at a community college.

You can try the best of both worlds. Go to a local college for a year or so and get some basic courses in. While you are doing that, you’ll have more time to research and apply to art or pastry schools. It’ll make your mom happy and it’ll give you time to make an informed decision.

As for “good” schools, that’s definitely up to you. I mean, we could give you a list of top-rated schools, but even the best school might not match up with what you want out of your education.

Secondly, you need to talk to your mom. Discuss exactly why she wants you to stay close to home, and exactly why you want to go far away.

It’s a tough time for parents, though, so be aware of that! My roommate freshman year of college was on the phone with her parents practically EVERY day for the first three months, lol.

Also, if you can’t come to a decision one way or another with your mom, you could always compromise.

Like, you could go to an in-state school for a year, then study abroad for a year.

(Don’t know how that would work out for pastry school, though…)

maybe u can gather some friends to go with you, so yourmother can have a more ease mind in letting you go cause i guess most parents will be worried about their children’s safety…
