Mistakes on college apps?

About a week ago I read an article that said that school counselors are telling students to make mistakes on their college apps on purpose to make them look “authentic.” I don’t think you should have to make yourself look stupid to be realistic, I mean aren’t college apps supposed to be perfect?

any opinions?

Absolutely. I’m not sure where you read this article, but that is just completely absurd. Officers look for applications to be perfect, like you said. Mistakes ultimately hurt someone’s chances of getting in; they don’t make the application more appealing in any way.

I didn’t do that. Do your best, that’s what they’ll expect of you once you’re there.

Besides it’s possible you’ll make a mistake without realizing it – how many mistakes do you want on your application?

Also, save humility for the interview. That’s where you have a chance to show you’re more than a student, but also a person. Don’t try to seem “perfect” or “authentic” – be your best and real.

HAHA that’s funny. Whenever I read papers or emails from people and they misspell words or use the wrong tense I think it makes them look STUPID.

I wouldn’t. I think the article was more geared towards students and not worrying too much about mistakes. Don’t “make mistakes” on purpose though.

My daughter is applying for colleges, too, and her counselor has not told her that. Sounds stupid to me. It is such a competitive process, why would you want to do anything to hurt your chances? The article sounds like it was written by someone whose kid had a low GPA and he or she wanted to clear the field.

They probably get lots of identical computer-generated apps, and this is an idea on how to make yours seem more personal and authentic…

I don’t know the source of your article, but please pretend you never read it! Colleges and universities are not in the business of sending students back to third grade grammar class.

hmm.

i don’t think people should use that article as a basis of how to apply to college..

ever admittance person is different, i’d assume.

and it probably depends where you’re applying.

i’d do my best.
