Major in what you like: Good advice or not?

When I was in HS and college, many people told me that I should major in a subject that I’m passionate about. I took that advice and after graduating from college (with top honors and work/internship experience), I couldn’t find an entry-level job within my field. In the end, I had to go back to school to major in something which (I thought) was boring but was in great demand to many employers.

So, is majoring in what you like good advice? In the end, if your desired major is not in demand, you’re still gonna have to go back to school to major in something else.

Life is all about compromise and choices. Sometimes your passion has to become your hobby and something you have less interest in has to become your career. Decisions about majors need to be tempered with common sense sometimes. My daughter loved history, and wanted to major in history, which she did. However, upon my advice, and the advice of some other people, she did a double major – history and psychology – and she is now working in psychology.

Sometimes. If a person knows that their bachelor’s degree is going to be their terminal degree, then I would suggest that they at least minor or get practical experience in a more easily marketable field. Many of the more fun college majors (psychology, history, sociology, english, etc.) won’t qualify you for a desirable, non-K-12 teaching job in their field.

Now if you’re planning on going on to graduate school, then absolutely I’d recommend majoring in what you like. It’s your last chance to “try on” different fields.

However, if you feel you’re stuck with an unmarketable degree, I’d recommend getting a master’s instead of a bachelor’s. That way you can argue to employers that your intent all along was to go that route.

it’s only good advice if you major is in demand. they are very few majors that are in high demand that people love. a good major like this is if you like to teach. A teacher will always be in demand but only if you are a science, math, English and sometime history major and of course elementary subjects. also a lot of majors are making you have much higher degrees then before now a sociology and psychology master degree means nothing you need a PhD. just to get a job.

To me, it really depends on what the passion is. If its something ridiculous that wouldn’t even help you put some food on the table then forget it!

I would probably go for something for a decent job taht you can stand. You do whatever you like on your own personal time.
