live in the dorm OR stay at home?

The university I want to go to is about 45 minutes away from my house (according to mapquest). Room and board at the school is about an extra $6,000.

Should I stay at home and drive out there for classes, or would it be worth it to pay the extra $6,000 for convenience, the experience, activities, etc?

I plan on getting a degree in Nursing.

It really depends on what you want out of college I would think. You just need to ask yourself how involved you want to be on your college campus. If you’re mainly going for the education I’d stay at home. I have a friend who commutes and is about the same distance from her college as you are. She likes it alright and says its really not a big deal. Although driving to and from campus everyday is a pain.

It all depends on what you want from going to the university. If you care about the social interaction, then you should live in a dorm. I think saving that money is probably a better choice. You should also see if you can manage the commute by grouping classes into fewer workdays.

Word of caution, sometimes you end up with a bad roommate and you end not enjoying the experience because your roommate annoys you 24/7. So, maybe you should do the commute first, and then if you want the college atmosphere you can find a classmate you like to be your roommate in the dorm/apartment.

It depends on your money and family, if you don’t mind them and it might be hard to swing the extra cash then stay at home (although the gas price will get high, but if you don’t really want to spend time with your family and can afford it go to a dorm it is probably worth it.

Also, it may help to sit down an add the gas cost and see which one is really cheaper.

Overall, it really is up to you but consider this.

Also, if you decide i would test how long it really takes to get there just in case or go earlier the first day.

college is all about trying things on your own and making mistakes and then learning from them. some people love dorm life and some hate it so it up to the person but here are some things to consider. dorm food is repeative and really expensive. food at home is free and good. you make more friends and can hang out with them anytime you want to if you like in the dorm/apartment. mom and dad are off your back until break comes around. if you wake up late for school you can run to class and still be on time or catch part of it besides missing everything. you don’t have to pay for gas if you live in the dorm but you have to share bathroom and your room with other people. most dorms have sequrity locks and things like that but people who live on top or under you can get on your floor. you have to lock your door everytime you go anywhere, even to pee. i am a college senior and i’ve lived in the dorms, apartment near campus and now at home so i know how it is. i was really iffy too when i choose where to live. all in all i think it cost the same rent/dorm cost vs. gas money b/c gas is really expendsive so its up to you. but one thing remember this the only time in your life where mom and dad can’t choose it for you so you are free to choose so make a good desision because if you deside to live in the dorm you have to say there for the year, though some places let to opp out after fall semester ends they charge you a fee. have fun at college

I think you should weigh out the pros and cons over calculating cost.

It may cost you less to fill up your tank, pay tolls and grab some food from a fast food joint if you live at home.

Then again, it will cost you by not living in proximity to your school. You’ll miss out on studying with classmates or joining related organizations, with whom you can network. Your instructors are in closer proximity as well and you can schedule one-to-one time if you have to much more easily if you lived nearby.

Plus, if you choose to live nearby, you may be able to get financial aid.

I personally think the $6,000 is worth it to live nearby.

I would stay at home. It would be cheaper and you can have a great meal….on the other hand, if you want to have the expierence every other college graduate had, then stay at the dorm. I personally would like to save my $6,000. I don’t think it’d be worth it!

i personally wanted to dorm, but due to financial reasons, i didn’t. from where i live it could possibly take 1-2 hours to get to school, depending on traffic and parking. plus, gas prices are insane over here. that’s why i ride the city bus to school.

however, if i were to dorm, i would get first priority just because i live so far away from the school.

if i were you, i’d stay home. you could use that extra $6000 on something important someday or perhaps save it. but if you want to see how dorm life is, it’s completely up to you.

My brother came back home after 1 year. He couldn’t stand his dorm mates. It really is a lot more convenient to stay at home. The “experience” is really college itself…not sleeping in a dorm room.
