Graduate School?

I am planning to go for grad school in early January 2008. My biggest problem is funding, and loans are not an option. The school I am planning to attend is U of Chicago, which, as you imagine, is extremely expensive. If anyone has any ideas on funding about these cases, please ANSWER ME!!

You can try and find an employer who will agree to pay for your education? Some will if you agree to work for them for X amount of years afterwards.

You didn’t mention your field of study, so I can’t really help.

You should know, however, that only med students, law students, and MBA students usually pay for graduate school. In the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, graduate students seek assistantships and fellowships that carry full tuition remission as well as a living stipend. Most often, these awards are extended by the departments in which the student is studying, but there are also foundation fellowships available. I cannot point you toward a pertinent foundation without knowing your field.

that depends on what your major is. if science major like phy, chem, bio, you don’t pay a penny. those majors have tremendous amount of funding from industry. mostly they pay you to go, the only thing you need to do is to work as teaching assistant. if you are some other major like history or education, then they may or may not have those offers. Before my day as graduate students, I could find some optional grants from different agents, meaning that your thesis has to be working on some specific topic they require since they pay you. Nowaday I don’t know how many of them exist.

Apply for grants? Take up a gig as a TA or research assistant? Sell your body for dirty, dirty money?

The first two the school should be awarding you anyway if you filled out a FAFSA; if they didn’t, file an appeal or look on the school’s joblink or its equivalent. For the last one, you’re on your own, but I hear good things about Craigslist.
