Just finished BS in Biology, can’t find work. I’m not social, been thinking about engineering, is it worth it

I think I picked the wrong major; everyone expects me to be a doctor. So I want to go to back to school to pursue engineering, i’m just afraid of the backlash. I’m hoping I can bypass all the GE requirements and can finish degree rather quickly. I’m wondering if anyone else has done something like this, and can offer their experience.

What do you mean you can’t find work?

You have a Bachelor’s degree! You should find “something”

Where are you even looking? Are you looking for the right types of jobs?

You’d most want to consider working as a Lab Technichian, or a Research Assistant. Look on Monster or Hot Jobs, and make sure you are looking for Entry Level postitions. They ARE out there… You just have to take your time. Not everything can be found immediatly.

Also, you can ask professors. They may know what types of companies you can look up, or what types of jobs you can obtain with a BS…

Never give up on something just because it’s not being fruitful right away! If Biology is something you really want to do, you just have to strive for it, and stay motivated.

I”m a Biology major myself, so I know where you are coming from. You don’t have to be a “doctor” if you don’t want to. (However, if you’re like me and want a Ph.D in some specialty like Genetics, techincally, I’d be a Doctor in genetics)

I believe if you decided to go back to school for engineering, it would probably be a waste of time and more importantly, money. You have a great degree. You just need to expand your horizons.

What are you willing to research in? There are hundreds of opportunities out there.

Engineering is important to, I won’t deny that. But you have a Wonderful degree.

I wish you the best of luck.

Yes I did this. I obtained a degree in English and went back for two more in Journalism and Library Science. I went to an inexpensive state school for two more years bypassing most of the GE requirements. It was the right choice for me for a variety of reasons. I went from a piss poor GPA to a 3.9, particpated a heck of a lot more, found internships from the start. Now I have the dream job I wanted. No regrets.

I don’t know whether you want to do that though. I think you just need to follow the previous poster’s advice. Even though my GPA was bad, I could have found work as an office assistant or something after graduating the first time. Maybe worked my way up to my dream job if I tried really hard.

There is a lot of backlash because people think it’s a stupid, wasteful idea. Do you just want a job or do you want to be an engineer? If you just want a job, don’t. You just have to be more creative about searching for a job. ****You’ll have a lot of explaining to do when you start interviewing for jobs, however. It’s a huge downside because employers will think there is something wrong with you, especially if you had a decent GPA! This is something to consider. You might feel uncomfortable on campus, because of your age as well.

Maybe just get a job, maybe not the one you want, just something for money, and try for a Masters in teaching, business administration, library science, etc… Often it doesn’t matter what degree you had previously.

David, Why not try contacting your local game and fish department, They may be able to intern for them. If you like the outdoors and animals this may be your profession!
