Is this a good idea?

If I major in Creative Writing is that a good idea? Will it open job opportunities or am I better majoring in English?

Skills in writing will ALWAYS open up job opportunities for you, in fields you aren’t even considering right now. If you love to write, major in creative writing. You may not be working as a “writer”, but good writing skills are always marketable. Don’t worry, you’ll find a job.

Frankly, neither Creative Writing nor English help you get a job. I think English would open more doors, but mainly in terms of getting accepted into graduate programs, i.e. I minored in English and am now in law school whereas law schools view degrees in CW as bullsh!t–so will many others. You could get a degree in either of those and maybe discover a job writing for a magazine, newspaper, etc…but they’re not easy to come by. That’s one of the reasons why people with degrees in subjects like that do end up going on to graduate school, because they can’t do much else with either of those degrees.

Doesn’t really matter what you major in, as long as you finish and get your degree. Plenty of people don’t end up working in “their field” anyway.

Creative writing will prepare you as well as English for just about any job. Do whichever is more interesting to you.

It really depends on what you want to do. Are you aware of job opportunites a creative writing degree can offer or are you simply more interested in the subject?Generally, most journalists/reporters tend to have a background mix of English/liberal arts majors so if that’s your interest, Creative Writing sounds fine!

Well that’s what I wanted to do! But, Writing is a very competitive field and u can’t always get a good job. Maybe minor with something else for back up.

I’m guessing you enjoy both since you are thinking of them as majors. As for job opportunities… both can get you towards journalism, teaching, etc. What are you interested in doing? You can go in undecided and dabble in some different classes until you decide.

Like most liberal arts degrees, in order to really go anywhere you will most likely have to get an advanced degree of some kind. You will probably be able to get some kind of job out of college regardless of the degree, but from my experience, these kinds of jobs are not going to be in your field. Get a degree in what makes you happy and interests you, but don’t expect it to be easy to land a job in your field right out of college.
