Would it be a bad idea to major is Spanish?

I understand that when searching for a job it is a major plus to be bilingual. Also, I live in a heavily Spanish populated city. The only problem I see is that I’d have to compete with native speakers for jobs. Can somebody please give me some advice.

The main reason one should major in Spanish would be because they intend to become a translator, linguist, or foreign educator, or something closely along those lines. I wouldn’t recommend majoring in Spanish just because you live in a heavily Spanish area. In college you will have a language requirement anyway and you can take Spanish courses to fill that requirement, and use your electives or take overloads to take more Spanish courses if you want. I would major in the actual field that you intend to seek a career in.

I say go for it!!!! You will ALWAYS be able to find a job anywhere especially in a high Spanish population area. I took 6 years of it in school but didn’t use it for a couple years and lost alot of what I learned. I still enjoy speaking with my Spanish patients at work but wish I had majored in it so I could speak and understand it perfectly. I think it would be a wise choice. If you get on the computer and research how many jobs there are out there that need translators(AND PAY WELL!) you would be amazed. I regret not taking my Spanish studies further. I say take the opportunity if its given to you. Good Luck!

That is a great idea …because usually if you transfer to a university or something they look for somebody that has taken spanish, french and so on! Good luck!

i think its a good idea, dont worry about competing with native speakers, im one and im impressed on how some americans speak spanish better than latin people..

for example, my AP spanish teacher is american and he knows a lot more than latin… of course is the teacher

he speaks perfectly, you could easily confuse him with a latin person.

Double major in finance/accounting as well. Then you’ll have extra marketable skills in professions where bi-lingual help is hard to come by.
