Is there a huge difference between a college and a university?

I know that in a community college you can’t get a 4 year degree. But other than that are there main differences that would affect my career if I graduate from a community college instead of a university? Also I am guessing I would get paid more if I graduate from a university, but I am just wondering about how much more would it be from graduating from a community college?

It depends upon your chosen area of study. In a meat-ax sense, a university is an aggregation of colleges, such as the college of business, the college of medicine, the college of dentistry, the college of liberal arts, and so forth, that are operated collectively under a single administrative regime.

That’s why it would seem anomalous for a single college, such as XCollege, a liberal arts college, to rename itself XUniversity without at the very least first growing into an institution of higher learning that consisted of more than one college.

CC is strictly for certificates, raising your GPA or getting a 2 -year associates degree. The only reason you would get paid more from graduation from a University is because often times, Unis have more majors, and are definitely extended study (4 years across the board).

And while yes, CCs are cheaper to attend, most universities are affordable, especially if you can get in-state tuition. I’m at an in-state Uni right now and I pay $6k/yr.

Normally a college will teach only a few subjects. There may be for example be the college of law, college of medicine, and college of theology. But a University is much bigger, and encompasses many colleges with in it’s campuses.

The perception out in the real but cruel world is a prestigious university gives a better education. If you get you primary degree from a small college, then a masters from a “better” university, I would think that would do you.

The specific function of a college is to teach lower and upper division classes to undergraduate students. They may offer graduate programs but the emphasis is on undergraduate

teaching.

A community college teaches undergraduate classes and that is its primary goal. It also offers classes that are of interest to the community but are not necessarily for credit.

Classes for credit are designed to transfer to a college or university and given equal credit so they don’t have to be repeated.

A university is concerned with research, obtaining grants for research, publishing research and books, and encouraging

cooperation between the university, companies and the government in related activities that further the university

goals. Professors are required to publish, to work with graduate students in their area of teaching and research,

and also to teach. Universities compete for grant money and for professors who are recognized in their field.
