People are talking about 4.4 GPA’s. My school is on a 4 point scale. What is the difference?
I have a 3.5 right now which I am trying to raise up so I can attend the University of Michigan. People have been telling me to raise it up to at least a 4.0, perferably a 4.4. Do AP classes count as more than 4.0’s? How does this work? Thanks!

Yes, AP classes count as more. A “B” is equivalent to an “A.” So if you receive an “A” in an AP class, you’ll get 5 points instead of the traditional 4 poitns for an “A.”

It is relative to your school’s grading system. When I was in high school, they didn’t use the traditional A, B, C letter grades which converted over to the 4 point scale. Instead, they used a 99 point scale which was in essence a percentage. (You could never actually get a 100 in anything, but I think it was because the computers were set up to only handle two digits….after all this was in the 80’s so technology was a lot less sophisticated then).
Anyway, I remember my final average in HS was something in the neighborhood of an 89.5 so I sort of figured out that 895/1000 = ??/ 4.0 which comes out somewhere in the neighborhood of a 3.5 or 3.6 final so I used that as a rough guess at the time as to what colleges were looking for.

At my school, all honors and AP classes were on a 5.0 scale. Some schools do this, some don’t do GPA adjustments at all. Universities are aware of this issue and pay a lot of attention to class rank in order to adjust for this and other factors.

the above person is right. Ap does count more than 4.0. Ap classes are on a 5.0 scale.
