Is Psychology considered a Liberal Art?

I’m a college freshman and want to major in Psychology. I also want to go to med school, where people with a broad liberal arts background are preferred. Does psych fall into this category? Is Psychology as useless of a degree as people make it out to be? Should I do a BA or BS? Are there better majors for people going into medicine?

As a Doctor you need to ask the right person the same question. There are counselors around for this purpose, make an appt. and ask your question.

Psychology is considered a Liberal Art! So is Philosophy, history, sociology, and counseling. Social Arts is a large field of study. As a Doctor, you are going to need to be very good at the sciences. But, without Liberal Arts, you may lose sight of the call to serve others, which Doctors are educated to do!

Good Luck!

Yes, psychology is a liberal art, along with math and all other sciences (not engineering). But since some schools have different college classifications, if it’s for a specific school, make sure they don’t have a separate designation for it on their website (most will just stick them all under liberal arts, but some break it into fine arts, humanities, and sciences).

Yes, psychology is a liberal art. I’m not sure whether it makes much of a difference whether your psych degree is a BA or BS. I’m thinking that those who call psych a worthless major or a worthless degree are really thinking that, in most states, one must hold a doctorate in psychology in order to become a licensed psychologist. As for getting into med school, ask your advisor to help you determine what coursework constitutes a pre-medical curriculum.

Biology or chemistry would be a better pre-med major. Psychology BA is a liberal art, Psychology BS is a science and would also be appropriate for pre-med.

As a psychology and sociology major I’ll tell you that no psychology isn’t useless. Usually it’s the science andengineering related graduates that tell you that.

Psychology is a social science but it does fall under liberal arts.

Think about it psychology , the study of human behaviour , is needed in almost every profession you can think of , from law enforcement, to health care, to teaching , to the law itself, to architecture (sp), even to business, marketing , advertising , biology , bio-ethics , gerontology , you name it.

Even engineering students need psychology to help with how a building or invention or design will look or help.

I think psychology ‘s gotten a bad rap far too long.

Psychology is a social science. I would think you’d be better off in a pre-med program if you want to go into medicine.

Yes, psychology is considered a liberal art. It’s only a useless degree if you don’t get your Master’s or above.

You will get a Bachelor of Science. If you want to be a medical doctor, take pre-med, biology, or for medical research, genetics.
