Is Law School for Me?

I’m a good writer, good reader, love logic, arguing, competitive, motivated by money, etc. I have the personality attributes, I have the time to commit… but, I’m nervous about financing a legal education. I think it will be worth it. I’m very interested in either international or environmental law or some combination of the two.

Although it’s illogical to ask for others’ experiences as a determinate of my own future plans, I’m going to anyway. 🙂

Can you please tell me if you regretted it, or not?

Did you go for the prospect of being a high-paid, high-powered lawyer? Were you an idealist hoping to change something? Did you dream of saying, “Objection!” during your childhood?

Last question, how on earth did you pay for it?

Thanks to any and all answers!

I’ll tell you what I did, and maybe that’ll help you make your decision. I had some time to burn during the week last summer, so I volunteered at my county prosecutor’s office. Basically I shadowed a prosecutor while he did pre-trial conferences, interviews and tried cases before a judge or jury. This was unpaid, of course, but it was invaluable for me because I, like you, was not sure that I wanted to go into the legal profession. It turned out that I loved the experience, and it’s given me something to keep me grounded in reality while I work through the theoretical world of law school.

Only you know what is best for you. But I know what a huge commitment law school is, so if you have the chance, work for a while at a law firm as a file clerk or secretary; or, if it’s convenient, volunteer some of your time. I’m sure that any government law agency (district attorney, public defender) would appreciate your help as they are often understaffed anyway. And it might make a difference in how you feel about embarking on a journey like law school.

You should not be asking people on Yahoo! Answers if your future is right for you. That is something only you can decide. If you are questioning whether or not you should go to law school because of the financial issues; you should now worry about that. If you are questioning because you are not sure what you want to do 100% maybe you should get sure before you get caught up in something you’ll regret!

I did regret not going to law school in a way. Friends and colleagues have said that I would have made a good lawyer.

I did say in a way since I was very happy about my career in education.

You’re a good writer and reader. Why don’t you become a journalist or news reporter or an author? But, if you really, really want to go to law school, why ask other people? Just find out yourself.
