Universities usually have colleges. Like Ball State University (in Indiana) has a Teachers College, Business College, Nursing College, and so on. Law could be a separate college at a university.

American universities have law schools, rather than law departments, because law is a graduate degree in the USA. In most other countries, law degrees can be done as undergraduate degrees, so they have a law department within another school or faculty.

Law school is usually part of a larger universities post-graduate curriculum. Once you complete your undergraduate work, you take the LSAT’s and apply to a law school program (sometimes the University might have a joint MBA/JD or other joint JD program) to get your Juris Doctorate. Once you have your JD then you can go and sit for the Bar Exam and be able to practice as an attorney in the state you took the Bar in.

It depends on the school. There are independent law schools, such as the relatively-new Charleston School of Law, and colleges of law within universities, such as the Nebraska College of Law, the law college within the University of Nebraska.

In general, American universities contain multiple colleges, such as Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Business Administration, etc. Many universities’ law programs are contained within a distinct college within the university.
