Is a degree in Social work really worth the time and money in college???

My heart is really for social work , but will it really pay off financially or will i still be struggling to find work and afford to pay off my loans?? Is there another field i should look into that is further rewarding with the same work attributes?

Assuming you are referring to a BSW here and not an MSW. The BSW is a very marketable degree and one that will certainly lead to a job. You will certainly make enough to pay bills, pay off college loans and all of those areas. The BSW can also save you money as it allows you to apply for advanced standing for an MSW program (graduate degrees are and will continue ot become increasingly necessary in all areas of employment). Advanced Standing allows you to complete you MSW in a year (saving you all that tuition). Average starting Salary for BSW is 20-40K and for MSW 30-60K depending on where you live, what population you work with, and the type of agency. DA

P.S. Social work is NOT a thankless job. Social work is a profession in which people do different jobs…and as with any profession there are always poor matches between a particular person and a particular job.

if you enjoy the hardships and the successes that come from social work, then by all means make sure you follow the path toward becoming an LCSW (licensed clinical social worker).

You will always be in need, will always have work in a variety of settings and can live anywhere you want and be totally respected with your credentials

You won’t be struggling to find work, but realize that you won’t be making big bucks right away. Social work is a thankless job, and it takes a LOT to succeed. If you can do, my hats are off to you.

My friend worked in social work while she was getting her law degree.
