Is a College Degree worth it…here’s my story what do you think?

Most of my friends having been paying their school loans back for years..and some have screwed that up.

Any way I just have a HS diploma and I make over 190K, I’ve had 3 different jobs since I was 21…the truth is I lied about my college background and no one has ever checked it out. The current company I work for (marketing btw) never checked it out or asked me about my “degree”. Last year after I finished first in sales in our office (the 5th year in a row) I came clean with my boss….he just laughed and said he didn’t give a damn…just show me the MONEY-BABY is all he said. I’ve recieved numerous offers from competiors through my career but I’ve turned them down…even when it’s been more money but they want me to move my family…my wife doesn’t want to move.

Well……..there’s my confession, I used to worry that I’d be discovered but I could care less now and I thank God I didn’t waste 100K plus on a worthless piece of paper and saddled with huge college loans paying the

Experience will always trump the college degree, but that degree is required by some companies. All I can say is that you had better hope that your company does not get bought out or you get laid off. Glad you’re doing well for yourself, but being dishonest on a job application is a great way to be black balled from ever getting hired with a company. Also, what happens when you start hitting a slump? Will your boss still continue to look past the fact that you lied?

Well, he may say he doesn’t care, but he can use it against you if you try to leave. If you can be hired by another place with them knowing you don’t have the degree and lied on your application, then more power to you.

Notice that you don’t need the degree because you’ve found something you’re GOOD at that you can make money at. That doesn’t happen with most people. College is supposed to help a person find there direction or path (supposed to). As long as you keep doing exactly what you do, and the field doesn’t change, you’ll be fine.

I hope you are putting away 100K of that 190K a year. You may thing you are in the catbird seat now, but times change trust me.

Going to college isn’t career training, it’s to get an education.

BTW, you seem to have drive, I suggest you don’t work for people but start your own business, That way it won’t be taken away by someone (your current boss may not care but a future one may have a bug up his *** about degree’s and throw you out in the street).

yours is just a pure luck, or fate that do not happen to the normal people. Looks like that you still have a long way to go and it’s hard to make any judgement till , or closer to the very end of your career. Dishonesty could be your biggest hurdle when demand and supply on whatever you are doing takes a big turn. Nobody knows how long your luck is going to last but in most cases, life does go up and down. Just curious, if you do have your own children, (or maybe you already do), would you tell them not to go to college, just finish HS, lie about your “degree” and you will make lots of $$?

From my own experience, experience will help over a degree. BUT having the education will help if you ever decide to change jobs. At one company that I used to work for gave everyone raises due to education level. I fought it due to the fact I had over 10 years experience and no degree. They did agree with me and did give me a raise, but not as much if I had had the degree. Congrats on doing such a great job! And if you decide to go back to school, you can get a degree w/o spending as much as they did. Community colleges are so much better now. And the degree is just as good.

Whether you wish to believe it or not, eventually lying about having a degree will bite you. You’re not too bright in my opinion. Sure you *allegedly* have a great job but money is only side of the equation. Sure you *may* be good but when you’ve earned it through lying? Doesn’t make your credibility all that strong.

It’ll get you in the end. Just watch.

That’s great. You remind me of that guy from the Will Smith movie, “Pursuit of Happiness”.

What exactly do you do, and how did you get into it?

…Why the 3 thumbs down? I gave what I think, how is that a bad answer?
