Is 35 too old to study to become a doctor if you only have a high school education?

I ‘ve worked as a medical assistant, but I only have a high school diploma and one year of basic college education. That means I probably won’t be done till I am 45 yrs..what are the chances a hospital/clinic will allow me in at that age?

You are not too old, and your experience as a medical assistant will be favorable because med schools want to know that you understand what it’s like to work in clinical practice.

The PhD in clinical psychology (those accredited by APA) take a 4-5 years, you also write a dissertation which could take another year. and you’ll do an internship year in a mental health setting.

See the links below, regarding info for older medical students.

Seems like you’ve got a few questions here. You’re never too old, but if you have a kid the real question is about priorities, not age. My recommendation would be to go to school and see how you do while going to school… maybe you’ll discover that being away from your daughter that much drives you crazy, and the sacrifice to become a doctor at this point is too much. MAKE SURE you get good grades. Medical schools won’t let mediocre students in. If you decide it’s too much, work at something a little less daunting, such as a physician’s assistant or a nurse, that is still related to your degree. You can always apply to medical school later, when your daughter is older. Do you have a nearby community college? Many colleges have tutoring centers that will help place you into courses you’ll be successful in, and they’ll give you resources to review. Many universities also have these but they’re harder to access than those at a community college.

Well, to go to school to be a therapist (physcology) it can be done in 6 years and thats a masters degree. Another year and a half you can get your PhD. Your a doc at that point so in about 8 years? Thats 43 for you and I wouldnt consider that old. You know how many doctors are “old”. Its a field you can do as long as you want, as long as your noodle dont fry out first and forget half your education. My son was seeing a doc for what they thought was bipolar and his doc could barely write the script. He still had his noodle ( well it was debatable). The guy had to be in his 70’s??

The thought here is that even at the age of 43 you could still practice until you 60-65 if not longer. Most places you can retire after 20 years youd have that not to mention your own discretion. I say go for it, your never too old to learn! Be prepared for a little competition though

you are never too old to go back to school…I work in a hospital and there are interns who are in their 40’s and 50’s….it’s all about how bad you want to become a doctor….study well so you can get into a good residency…
