Yes, I interned at Sony Music. First you have to find some type of music references on your resume. Start a tiny label with your friends and launch shows at your school or the local coffee shop. Do something that shows initiative and leadership. Then you have to network! Go to music labels around town and ask to work for free. Do ANYTHING for them, like getting coffee or making copies. Kiss some *** and someone will notice you and hopefully give you more responsibility.

That’s the business side.

On the music side, take music classes. Learn music theory and develop your ear for pitch and intonation. Learn an instrument, preferably piano. You could also learn how to DJ. Take computer music classes at school. Learn Pro Tools and learn how a studio is mic’d and set up. Pro Tools will allow you to mix tracks and improve sound quality of some singers.

I hope you meant record production and not A/R. Being an agent is totally different than record production. It’s a lot of work for VERY little pay. I sold out and don’t work in music anymore. The politics and hours to pay ratio was terrible. The music business is not about music at all. Just good marketing and creative sound production. Listen to any live show. Artists don’t need to know how to sing in key or in tune.

It’s good that you have a back up plan, but first check into a college course on it, or community courses. Check around, do an internet search/
