If you’re undecided between film and law, then you need a good overall university that also offers a film major. Luckily, you’re in NY, and this region has a lot to offer. I suggest, therefore, that you check into:

– New York University

– Columbia University

– CUNY Baruch

– CUNY Hunter

– Fordham University

– SUNY Stony Brook

– Hofstra

– SUNY Purchase

– Rutgers

Some of these have a film major, specifically. In fact, NYU has one of the best film schools in the world. Others offer film, but as part of their theater major. Thing is, a lot of these schools are hard to get into.

Thus you may also be really interested in the programs at Five Towns College, out there on Long Island. That one, I’ve linked, below. It’s not as hard to get into as some of the others I’ve listed, but it’s of good quality.

If your academics aren’t that great, you can also consider some of the local community colleges. A lot of them, especially in the NY region, offer film and tv, and they can be a good way to improve your academics so you can transfer to a strong, four year school.

Good luck!

As you can see by our icons, you and I are probably related. 🙂

I graduated with a degree in film and television from New York University, I also have a law degree from Cardozo Law School. I highly recommend both schools.

I can honestly say that I did not need any pre-law training prior to law school (and I graduated *** laude).

Consequently, I think majoring in pre-law is a waste of time. On the other hand, due to the proliferation of inexpensive digital video technology, you may get more bang for your buck taking one semester’s worth of tuition and making a movie outside of the film school environment.

You can’t go wrong with a solid liberal arts education. NYU is excellent for that.
