Make a list of specific critical thinking functions generic to all college students regardless of major. Then show which can be developed and practiced while studying Geology.

In most school, general education requirements include a physical science….Geology can be the elective to help meet one of the general ed requirements.

For an non-science major taking a Geology class may not seem like a great choice. But if you can point out the advantages and opportunities to learn things in Geology that apply to studies in general, it could be a great service to other students.

Off the top of my head:

logic….reasoning via the laws of original horizontality and superposition

The Geologic time scale is mind blowing for most because of the billions of years involved. So organization, classification, scale, heirarchical data structures….all occur in Geology and in education in general.

The classification of rocks uses dichotomous decision trees…great organizational skills involved here.

Wow, skies the limit….so many great possibilities.

Go for it!

You can go into all the neat things you can do with rocks –

1) shoot them from a sing shot

2) Sling them at Goliath

3) Rock fights

4) weapons during Riots

5) paper weight

6) Make fake moon rocks to pretend we landed on the moon

7) use them to wipe poo off your shoe

8) …..
