If you are planning on, basically, taking an extended vacation, then you should be up front with your superiors and tell them

If you are going to Europe for academic reasons, to study abroad, or that nature, it can make it less likely they can fire you.

However, lying about taking a “Personal vacation/trip to Europe” is only going to get you in hot water with your bosses. They hired you because they wanted you be reliable, and here you are proving that you are not.

You’re BEST bet? Quit your job, and tell them it’s because you are going to Europe. Then ask if you can reapply in 3 months when you return. Because no matter how you put it, they still need to find a Replacement for you, for those 3 months.

What are you trying to get out of? Are you a student? If so, just take your trip during the summer, or take off for a semester. If you’re a professor, then tell them what you’d like to do- ask to be excused from your duties in order to broaden your knowledge through travel- as in, sabattical. If you’re working some other kind of job, you either need to save up 3 months of vacation time or leave your job. This isn’t rocket science- there’s no lie you can tell that won’t end up with you getting in trouble. And I can’t think of any excuse good enough to get you a 3 month leave anyway. A sick relative only gets you a few days or weeks- after that, they’ll tell you to get outside help or quit your job. Don’t even get into it- too messy. Just tell the truth. If they don’t go for it, shorten your trip.

I am supposing that you are an instructor? Why don’t you look into yourself….to find this one. If going to Europe is the important, and you have to search for an excuse, how much do you enjoy your job? Money is the underlying answer and job security..I understand, but look into your company or schools approved reasons for leave.
