I’m really really scared to go away to college. How normal is this? How long does it take to adjust?

It takes different amounts of time for people to adjust. I am starting my 4th year in college and I live for the time when I get to go back. The cure, find friends and have fun. But don’t have so much fun you get in trouble, and concentrate on your studies when you need to. Don’t leave things to the last minute, it makes college less enjoyable. Don’t go home all the time either. I would say don’t go home for a month after you move in. that way you get acclimated to the campus and have time to cement some friendships.

You also want to get involved so you can have the whole college experience. You don’t want to sit in your room everynight watching tv. Make friends, make sure you are studying somethin you like. If not, change your major. It is better to spend a year or 2 extra in school than a lifetime doing something you don’t like!

If there aren’t any major mental issues, two weeks. Most often it’s far less. You’ll be surrounded by people your own age who are going through precisely the same thing, and you’ll have professors and professionals who understand that kids get scared.

The best strategy is to work very hard at your studies and let your class and study schedule dictate your choices during your time off. That means that your schoolwork must come first. Anyone who assails you for being a ‘brain’ or ‘nerd’ for this is (1) not your friend, either potentially or presently and (2) unlikely to be coming back to school for the next term anyway.

Be very careful of colleagues who want you to drink and party: these guys are trying to submerge their own fears by surrounding themselves with celebration, but it all gets exceptionally depressing in a very short time. Keep romances as light as you can at first, too. Keep your own counsel, do your own work, do your own studying. You’ll find your way quickly enough.

It’s perfectly normal… and it takes about thirty minutes to go away… you’ll be so overwhelmed & excited meeting all new people, and experiencing all new things (i.e. your new-found freedom)… Prop your dorm room door open while you’re unpacking – you’ll be surprised how many other wide-eyed freshmen will stop in and say hi. If not, be the one to walk around, smile big, and introduce yourself. You’ll make a good impression (remember, all the other freshmen are nervous, too)…

College is the most fun four years of your life – cherish it, make the most of it. It goes by fast.

Best of Luck.

very normal just takes a little while to get adjusted just go out and meet people if you live in apartment thats great since it gives you a few free friends hopefully there all cool. Other than that most universities have welcome weeks which is agreat time to meet other freshman or upper classmen that can help ya get comfortable with your surroundings. just remember to be nice and not afraid to aproach people and you will be set.
