Start it off with a universal “quote” which everyone can agree with. A hook statement, basically, that captures the reader’s attention, which instantly makes them relate to you. A quote that goes something like: “a wise man sees failure as progress.” Something like that shows maturity, prosaic prose, and an understanding of your potential.

best way to start off is detail the bad grades you got–such as in what subjects– and WHY that happened. Sickness or death in family, or you partied too much night before the exam, etc. Good idea would be to add how you are going to get better grades in the future.
