Believe it or not there are more and more students like you in college right now. I agree with the other answer that a community college would be a good first step. They typically offer a lot of sections of basic classes at a lot of different times including evenings and weekends. You will probably have to take some sort of placement testing for math and reading. Don’t stress about it. Most people end up having to take a remedial math course or two. You may also want to look into some sort of student development course that helps prepare students for college. Most community colleges offer them. Don’t over do it at first. Start with one or two classes. If your children are school aged I have heard that it helps to have a homework hour and everyone (including you) do their homework at the same time every evening. Also look into programs offered at the college. See an academic advisor they can advise you of any programs for returning adults. Good luck.

I suggest you either do a Community College or Online College. That is great you are wanting to get back into school. It is never too late to do that. Actually the older students usually make the best and most fun students. I taught a drama class for seniors and older adults and man they were a blast. They actually take their studies seriously and have fun doing it at the same time. They are eager and excited to learn.

I wish you the best and yes a community college is a good way to get your feet wet, not spend a ton of money fidning out what degree you want, get the feel for college. Plus if your kids need you or they are sick you won’t have ot miss out on anything major like in a University.

Start off with one or two classes that help prepare you for other college classes (basic algebra or college english).

You’d be surprised at how many people in their 30s through 50s are returning to school. They’re usually the ones that succeed because they really want to be at school and learn the materials.

As an adult, you’ve learned how to manage your time, focus on the important issues, stay on track with plans, and ignore distractions. These are the key skills that many students lack with they’re 18 and starting college. This is why many young people drop out of college.

Stay focused and you’ll do fine. Your kids will be so proud of you when you succeed.

I agree that starting with a community college or Votech is an easier way to adjust to school again. An english or math class is a good basic to get into the routine of homework and study skills. Don’t fret about it too much, you have a maturity level higher then the younger classmates and you probably are going to use your money wisely when it comes to an education. I assume you don’t have the time or money to waste on just” hanging out” Good luck and I hope you succeed.

I am a sophomore in college. I started to take college classes in 2006. I love it. I felt the way you did.I was scared never been to college. And now I love it. I never thought that I’d attend college.

Look up the community college you are wanting to attend, and talk to the counselor tell them what you want to do. They will be more than happy to help you out.

If I were you I would start with one class at a community college. It is the very essence of the community college to take ‘nontraditional’ students.

By taking one class, you can learn to adjust and what is expected. By going to a community college, you will ‘fit’ in more with the other students (some of which may be in similar circumstances as you). Good luck.

i so agree .. start at a community college.. smaller classes and gets you back in the jump of things.. i’d been out of school for 6 years before i started up this past spring. There are alot more going to college for the first time.. i found it easy and relaxed.. and all the instructors were willing to help when i had questions..

Im transfering to the State college this fall cause I feel ready to be thrown in to the rush and larger halls.. but take your time.. it took me weeks to get used to the pace again! and i finished with dean’s list!

If you are like me…raising kids, in your thirties and holding a full time job…sitting in a traditional classroom is NOT where you need to be. I chose online college. I am well on my way to my degree in the comfort of my own home with no set time I have to be in class. I don’t have TIME to sit in a classroom for 3 or so hours a day. This way I do not have to. You may want to check into online schools. It is the best thing I have ever done.

Don’t be afraid. Check into the community college nearest you, have a chat with a counselor, and see where that takes you. College is great!
