I am 26 and about to start the long road to becoming a neurologist… Am I Nuts??

I am 26 and about to start my first year of undergrad majoring in neuroscience. It is my intention to eventually become a neurologist. I figure this will tie up my life for some 10 odd years, accumulating probably 120 grand in school loans. Lately I’ve been plagued with some serious self doubt. I wonder whether I’m too old to be just starting on something like this while my friends have already cemented their careers and some are starting families. Does anyone have advice or stories of embarking on an education like this (medicine/law) at an older age? Am I being unrealistic?

Life is not about how long you live but how well you live it, you are definitely not too old,if being a neurologist is really what you want you then go for it, there’s always two sides to a coin, you may end up being more successful and having a more fulfilling career than someone who became a doctor at 26. The best thing about life is that anything can happen, you just have to believe you can do it.

Be happy!

Peace.

When did 26 become old? Jesus, my mom went to nursing school and graduated at age 62! If you want to be a neurologist then go for it. You only live once! And considering I just paid 3 grand for an MRI and $300 for an office call to my neuro, you’ll make that money back in no time!

I say take the plunge, as long as you believe in yourself and stick at it. A neurologist will earn that in a year anyway!!!

If it all goes to pot just go bankrupt, OR bail after you get your first degree and have a good career as a neuroscientist or something, not necessarily a doctor/consultant but a researcher. Lots of options for you and you dont have to go all the way through all ten years. Decide as you go. Dont be a slave to boring mediocre work if you have such potential.

I am starting adult nursing and I’m 22, but it will only take 2.5 years so not quite as long.

If there is will there is a way.

At 26 it is somewhat old to start trying to get into med school. Have you ever considered pharmacy?

There are many advantages to it such as:

1) Less time to finish

2) 75-150K is the starting salary depending on location

3) most jobs are 9-5

4) You get to start a family sooner

5) You are still involved in a patient’s life

Everyone has their purpose! Maybe one of your purposes is to be a beacon of hope and stand for what human beings can accomplish!

Someone has to be a neurologist, so why not you? I say, go for it. Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for Humanity.

No way. If you are too old, then I am too. I am 30, and still have 4 years before I finish my undergraduate education.

I know people who have not gone to grad school until their late 40’s. One started Pharmacy School when he was 48.

Chase your dreams. Otherwise you will regret not doing it

If this is something you really want to do, go for it. You might always wonder what could have been, so go for it.
