How was your first week of college (as a student)?

Having gone through this (I’ve graduated!), I’d say the first week is a pain when you have to drop and add classes.

My first week in college was incredibly fun, but then I went to the top party school in the nation three out of four years I was there… You look around and find your fit socially and academically and surprise yourself when it’s not at all what you thought it would be coming out of high school. Most freshmen get involved in their dorm somehow because it’s the most available and advertised group where they live (the dorm), and some get involved in the Greek system or another campus organization. That first week is supposed to be exploring time. You mention finding classes and the pain of that… I can’t stress enough how important it is that the first semester of college should be academically a continuation of high school in that you take classes you feel comfortable with, general stuff that will allow you to, or count toward a major in whatever you want to but still let you explore college in general. There’s much more to college than coursework, even if you do want to be a doctor, architect, engineer, or something else that takes a lot of tough coursework.
