How many years will it take me to get a PhD?

The American Psychological Association has information on PhD psychologisy programs. The link is below.
Other possibilities include Social Work (generally a Masters Degree) , Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists,. Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and many others. See the last link below.
To be a PhD Psychologist it will take 8 years of school that includes 2000 hours of internship/supervised practice.
But that’s the least of it. You’re required to do research project, including one that results in a dissertation that can take you a good year or so to write once you’ve gotten all of the material together. For a clinical program, there are probably a zillion assorted practicuums and other exercises they’ll put you through as well.
None of this is to discourage you: it’s actually fun and fascinating, and if you’re self-motivated you’ll have a marvelous time doing it. But it’s a lot of work, and it’ll rule your life for probably around five years. My electrical engineeering PhD was fairly straightforward and took me five years, which is about average for engineering.
Another option can be getting one’s master’s degree in social work (MSW), thus becoming a licensed clincial social worker (LCSW). The LCSW can open up their own practice (after having experience) and may even diagnose mental health problems as well as get reimbursement from some insurance companies. If interested, you can search ‘social worker’ at the www.bls.gov/oco site. Wishing you the best of luck in your endeavors!
