How long is too long for a college application essay?

I know the standard is around 500 words, and my application says “please try to limit yourself to 500.” Is that completely set in stone though? I’m having a really hard time paring mine down, its about 1000 right now…has anyone ever submitted essays of this length? Not double spaced it’s one and a half pages long and reads pretty quickly..anyone, opinion?

They won’t even bother to read it, if you can’t sum your essay up in the maximum amount of words they want you to write it in.

They might also just get really annoyed, honestly.

“Please try to limit yourself to 500 words” sounds like just that to me. Maybe a max of about 600. Not that they’ll count the words, but keep in mind that they have to read everyone’s essays. You have written double the amount. You will find that in college, the ability to write lengthy is not always a notable accomplishment; it is understood that you already have the ability. If a professor asks for no more than 3 pages, writing 5 doesn’t impress them. It actually can annoy them because you didn’t follow directions. You must be able to express your thoughts in a concise manner and sometimes they’ll count off or just stop reading at the cut off. I doubt this in your case as this is an admission essay.

In response to your question about submitting an essay of this length, it depends on the program/level/school. Some essays and writing samples are 2 pages, 5 pages, 10 pages. It just depends.

I would definitiely shorten it down from 1000 to approximately half of that. I’m sure you can shorten your paper and it still retain the quality that the longer version had.

That’s a really bad idea. When a word limit of 500 words is set, that means you can go over or under by maybe another 150 words, but after that it’s just excessive.

Not being able to write a very short essay like that gives the impression that your writing skills are inadequate. You should be able to zero in on something and write it following instructions. It’s also very annoying to those who have to read it. I’d bet that many would stop after the first 2 pages anyways.

My essay for the University of Colorado was a page and a half closer to two pages. They will usually specify, if they don’t you want to be around 1-2 pages or so. If I were you I’d call the school and ask.. thats what I did. I have all of the colleges im applying to in my phone book and I have called each school numerous times asking for different information 🙂

you have to condense it to 500 words if thats the limit. they wont even care about the rest and like the first guy said, theyll get annoyed. if you cant even follow a simple set of directions, how are you going to be an asset to the university?

yes it is completely set into stone. otherwise, just submit that one and screw yourself over. they will only read the first 500 words. or like even if u apply online, it will cut it to 500 words

You have a double-spaced one-and-a-half page paper that’s 1000 words. That’s ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. 1.5 double-spaced is like 600 words, 700 MAX.

Go over and the Admissions Officers will remember you as that guy who wrote too much for his essay (meaning, you can’t follow simple directions, and you have poor writing skills).

Rules are rules. If you cannot follow them, what makes you think they will let you in?

Honestly, they dont mind if it goes over a few words (they arent counting after all). However, twice the length is too much.

Generally, they’ll tell you how long the essay should be. Min-max.
