English or Communications majors/graduates…?

I’m stuck between these two degree plans. I would enjoy either one. I’ve read that English is more prestigious, but it seems like Comm is more marketable. Also, I work full time so I was wondering which would be easier, not that that would weigh much into my decision. Are a lot of the same job opportunities open to both of these? Which ever I decide to go with, I will probably minor in the other.

Any thought or opinions?

I also worked full time while in college, and had to build my school schedule around my work schedule. As it happened, I ended up with a B.G.S. in English (Bachelor of General Studies), and 2 concentrations — History and Creative Writing — but no minor, technically speaking. Depending on what you want to do with your degree, either could be a good option. There are a LOT of companies who look at a degree only as proof that you will stick to something, and don’t care what it is in. I know someone in marketing for Union Pacific who has a degree in Psychology, for example.

Personally, as a writer, I never really plan to USE my degree, but everyone says it’s nice to have one, so what did I do? Conformed, baby!!! (Without sarcasm, the world would be a dreary place indeed.)

Good luck with either option!

It’s not so much that English is more prestigious as that it’s more generally applicable to both academia and the business world, while communications gives you more professional training in a specific area. It may also provide you with more connections in that field through your professors and career center, so that’s something to consider.

It’s up to you which you do, but I’d recommend picking a different subject for your minor if you choose to major in communications. Odds are, the English classes that you’ll need to be an effective writer will be built into the degree requirements; that won’t necessarily be true in reverse.

I prefer subs by far. I automatically learn Japanese from anime and I can learn stuff Japanese language programs don’t teach me But even when I wasn’t learning the language it was still better in sub because it ruins the essence as you said and a lot of the jokes are funnier in Japanese and can’t be the same in English If you were to only watch dub you wouldn’t be able to watch a lot of anime. When its dubbed they often don’t translate the Japanese text so it takes you time to figure out if the place has changed or if its 2 years later or something else Lastly, If you watch it in dub it is harder to tell if someone is close to another. Because they all call people by their first names. But in subbed anime it will sama, san etc it will tel you their relationship. And as some have said, the original is best
