If you want to be a clinical psychologist, a professor or a researcher, a Ph.D. in psychology is essential. Clinical psychology programs typically take 5-6 years after you graduate from college with your Bachelor’s. Other types of psychology (social, personality, developmental, industrial/organizational) are approximately 4 year programs.
Consider though that some programs might be so competitive that you would want to spend 1-2 years doing research after you graduate from college before applying to the Ph.D. program. This means the entire process could take as long as 10-12 years.

4 years for undergrad 2 for masters 2 for PhD or 3 (I think) for MD plus your two years of residency You would need to do a search for “PhD psychiatry programs” or MD psychiatry programs” online and see what the differences are as far as what you can do with the degrees, and how long the schooling is.
