Degrees listed as “arts” usually implies a larger emphasis on theory and are accepted towards a higher degree while degrees listed as “science” usually imply a larger emphasis on practice and you may have to take additional classes if you choose to go for a higher degree. This information does, however, differ by discipline and school. Here are the basics:

* 2 year degrees *

AA = Associate of Arts

AS = Associate of Science

* 4 year degrees *

BA = Bachelor of Arts

BS = Bachelor of Science

* Graduate Degrees (non-doctoral)*

MA = Master of Arts

MS = Master of Science

* Doctoral *

PhD = Doctor of Philosophy

MD = Medical Doctor
