How hard is it to get into a “good” college?
Im currently 15 and I am a Sophomore in High School. I screwed up my freshman year badly. This year I currently have a GPA of 3.2 and am currently enrolled in AP English Literature . I live in Dallas, TX and I am hoping I can get into SMU (Southern Methodist University) My freshman year went horribly. I was going through a “phase” and just didn’t care about anything. I currently attend a charter school (Harmony Science Academy Dallas) Do you think I can get in?

you can still get into a “good” school witha 3.2 it wont be an ivy league school but high ranked state schools and some private schools will accept you, but you still have 2 years to raise your GPA so dont worry just keep studying. If you get yourself to a 3.8 you will open up your options alot more (but you never know I got a 4.2 and a 2120 SAT and didnt get into Yale sooo…) but practice your SATS, write a killler essay, and blow them away in the interview and you’ll do great. One bad year wont have that big of an effect on your college career. GOOD LUCK! (p.s www.collegeboard.com is a great college website you can search any university and it will show you the requirements, what percentage of students were accepted with what gpa, average sat score, etc. GREAT website very helpful)

You ought to call this college and speak with someone in their admissions office. He or she may be able to help you. Explain that you are interested in attending that college when you graduate, but also explain what you’ve written here. Whomever you speak with can tell you what they look for in applicants and what you can do this year and in the next two years to raise your chances of being accepted. You still have plenty of time to get into extra-curricular activities and do better than you so far have.

I think you could probably get into SMU. You won’t be able to get into someplace that is really ‘top tier’ like Rice, but a 3.2 isn’t a disaster–you will still get into college! If you really like SMU, you should consider applying Early Decision (or Early Action if they don’t have ED). It really helps you get in!
