How do I visit home if I work part time during college?

Two hours away from home and was wondering how easy it is to take time off of work to visit family during a few weekends or holidays?

If you take a job that was designed for a student, then it is quite easy, because employers often expect that you would be away for holidays. You may need to shorten your holiday somewhat, though, to make it easier for the employer to get by. If the job is just a job, it becomes more difficult, and you may have to use vacation time (if your job gives you any) and visit your family less frequently. The problem with that is that the dorms are usually shut down during major holidays, and you might not have anywhere to stay (this may depend upon the number of students from out of state and international students at your university, though).

Get a campus job! They close when school is out, so you can just take off. If you get a local job it is harder, but even the local businesses are connected to the major universities in that that’s where their money comes from. They are not as busy when school is out, so if they already know you are a student, they won’t be shocked when you won’t work through spring break.

Good luck.

To your basic question: You visit home VERY infrequently.

To your follow up details? Welcome to the world of college (and work); part of the fun is discovering how you do this balancing act, study, work, and visit. Wouldn’t trade a day for my experience, often wish I could go back. Have fun – enjoy – please share on Y!A as appropriate. Time for YOU to decide based on what you discover, boss, studying, family needs, etc. Like college – no firm answers only MORE QUESTIONS to assist you to think critically!

Best of luck – stay in school!
