How do I get the inspiration to do well in school again?

I’m a college student going for a English/theatre degree.Ever since high school 3 years and a higher GPA ago, I can’t do really well in classes. I keep failing classes and not doing assignments because I’ve lost both the inspiration, motivation, and the determentation to do any of my assignments that have been given to me this time around. I am a major procrastinator and every time I sit down to try to work, I always get distracted and I find myself not doing it at all because it’s too late. I don’t have anyone to study with because every time I get up the courage to ask, I hear about how they have to work all the time, and I don’t want to waste their time. I tried to sit and just focus on doing schoolwork, but it doesn’t work. Whenever I take notes and pay attention in class, I feel like I don’t know the material and when it comes to studying for tests, I just don’t get whatever that was taught;whenever I do tests, 9 times out of 10, I’m close to failure on it. CAN ANYONE HELP ME?!?!

Well try to remember why you wanted to get your degree in the first place, and what you can do after you get it. Then think about what your life will be like if you don’t. If you no longer feel enthusiasm about your current field, try exploring other ones. I personally get my motivation from my girlfriend, I know if I keep going and get a degree life will be better for both of us, so if you can find a similar person or goal that motivates you then do it, and think of it whenever you start to feel like you don’t want to do the work.

Lost your motivation, huh… Have you considered that maybe a career in english/theater isn’t really what you want to do? If you’re pretty far in to college it may seem to be little late to be switching majors, but I think that starting over is better than being stuck in a career for the rest of your life that you don’t really want to be a part of… I mean, you only live once, right? I had a similar revalation (albeit a little earlier than you, but anyway…)… I wanted to be doctor since I could remember, until I found something I loved more. You should be passionate about what you do, so if its not english or theater anymore, find out what is.

If you still want to keep your major, maybe you should revisit some things that inspired you to pursue this career in the first place?

As for the rest, I would maybe look into tutoring, maybe drop some classes if I have to, and definitely take homework everywhere. Do some walking somewhere, waiting in line, sitting around; at any time possible.

I’m also bad about procrastinating, in fact, I’m procrastinating right now…… maybe you should take your work to a quiet place where there is absolutely nothing else to do BUT your work. Convince yourself that you have to finish it right that moment, and try to do it.

Sounds like you are studying the wrong thing. If you’re failing and having a hard time understanding material you better find something you really care about. Really think about if that is what you want to do as a career. Think about what you do best and what you’re good at. Chances are if you’re not motivated by the subject you should change your major. Set some goals for yourself, both short term and long term. Set up some really good rewards as well as serious penalties. I know this sounds juvenile, but no one has to know, and they really do work. I am an education major with two semesters left and spend a LOT of time trying to find ways to motivate students. I personally get that way sometimes though, it is inevitable. Don’t get down on yourself, you’re only human. But don’t let it become a habit either, it’s so much harder to come out of a hole like that. Limit time on the phone, on facebook, and with the TV. Set aside time each day for a little studying otherwise it’s too hard to start up again. Start with small increments and move up so you’re used to long study times. Don’t be shy, find a study buddy who is on your level and can help you get in the habit of studying. Good luck, it’s all up to you!

You have to dig within yourself. I graduated high school in 98 and went straight into a 4 yr as a nursing major. I got through my junior year and quit. My grades were horrible my sophmore year…I didnt want to study, didnt care, basically gave up in my mind and there was no changing that. So I was 20 when I quit school, and have had some great jobs and even opened up my own business at age 23. I am now 27 and just started my education again. This is my second year back but now I am an accounting major. Something I would have never have dreampt that I would be doing. After having to chase after pay checks, work my *** off, work for crappy employers, that was enough to motivate me. I am married and want to start a family…that light at the end of my tunnel is what keeps me going. I am doing 16-18 units per quarter. Maybe you are just not as interested in the major you chose. What ever it is…SUCK IT UP and just get through it. A professor in one of my classes gave us the same lecture…and told us that on average studies show that people who have at least a BA or BS will make at least 1 million dollars more over the course of their life time. That is quite a bit of money. Perhaps also seek out tutoring at your school. I have had to that several times, they explain what you dont understand and basically act as a study partner! JUST DO it! You do not wnat to have to do it all over again Later!

Best wishes to you…and GOOD LUCK!

It sounds like you’ve lost interest in your area of study. Perhaps you don’t see yourself connecting with a career once you have that degree. You might want to consider taking some time to really consider whether this is the right path for you. When I first went to college I was going for a degree in English. I felt the same way as you do now so I quit halfway through my first semester. Three years later I enrolled and got my degree in Accounting because I took the time to really figure out what I wanted to do for a career. The second time around I graduated C u m Laude because I was passionate about reaching my goals.
