How do I become a better student?

Currently, I am an English major aspiring to a doctoral degree attending at Cerritos college. I have had some of the best instructors, taken the classes that have demanded the most of me, and was always considered “smart”. My fall semester started about two weeks ago. As much as I enjoy the lectures and experience from these classes, I can’t seem to buckle down and do the assigned work. Is there something missing? What could it be that is not allowing me to do well this semester? Why is it that I cannot get down to work? Any input is appriciated-teacher, professor, or instructors preferred.

hi…i am fund of learning myself, its just that there is a certain point in life wherein it seems that it is all that i have been doing and that there should be more. I don’t know how you feel right now about learning and how it has shaped your life, where it has lead you and where you certainly want it to lead you. No matter how much we enjoy something it always come down to that question, what comes next and how will i live up to it.

As you said, you are good at what you do…and i believe you are… thus, as i see it, the answer to your question is simply asking yourself not HOW but WHY you want to become a better student.

Find something to divert some of your energy so that you will not get tired easily at the end of the day and so that studying will not simply be a routine for you. If you won’t mind, find an outreach program that not only challenges your skill as a student but also your teaching prowess. I know you have one. Help others study, especially those who find difficulty in learning. Do this in a part-time basis if you like.

These are my points of view in life. Hope that I am able to help shed a few of those burden off your shoulder. Don’t let you worries linger, shake it off.

GOD is good, All the Time…Listen and be aware of the signs of your life. God Bless…

something over the summer has made you lose your focus, become less motivated, maybe even not seeing the end of the tunnel or what the degree will mean.

You need to have a goal. Need to have a career you’re reaching for. Have you in the past been enjoying what others have been teaching you but in addition to that you have not been working toward a goal? If you just learn what they teach you then you will be lost when you graduate. You must also do research on your own, become curious about things, see what different fields are out there, try different areas (like do volunteer work, and finding professionals who do jobs and inquire about what their jobs is like), etc.

Occasionally there is starting trouble as with cars left out in the cold. or too hot and vapour locked. It is likely that you are subconsciously rebelling against a gruelling, self-set schedule.

An overstretched mind will refuse to take in more like a fully soaked sponge cannot absorb any more water.

Take time out and waste it in conscious idleness and let things to sink in leaving the outer brain ready to take in more.

Explore this site and see how much of that can apply to your case. You can try out one or two ideas to see if they work.
