Fear….of college?

I feel helpless about my future…

My GPA dropped down to 3.20

SAT score is around 1700

Although I do take college courses,

I just received very low scores on all from

last semester…

English is my second language (bilingual).

I do participate in high school as:

-assisted student body class representative

-club involvement as: president, secretary, member….

-played instrument for over 12 years

-recognized through art works

I fear because my family is the 1st generation coming to

US.

I fear because I am the only one who can read, write and speak english decently to the point people can understand in my family.

…and I am in fear because I’m afraid I won’t get into good UC schools.

Please help me.

Your GPA is above a 3.0, you’ve got great extracurriculars, you’re already taking college-level courses, and you’ve accomplished all this while supporting your family in a language that isn’t your native tongue. You should be incredibly proud of all that you’ve done so far. It sounds very impressive to me, and I’m sure admissions officers will appreciate it, too.

I’m guessing that your lack of familiarity with English is bringing down your SAT scores, so you may want to consider taking the TOEFL to balance that out if you haven’t already. Other than that, it sounds like you’re in pretty good shape. Remember: California’s a big state. There’s a school out there for you.

Don’t worry…because college is more difficult than h.s. as you know, and you took some college level courses, so you already know what to expect!

You will make friends at college that will help you suceed. You should join a group that is also your nationality. At the University of Washington, every nationality has a club you can join. There you will get support that you need.

The professors are also a source of help, harder to meet but they can really make a difference if you find a good one.

You will do fine… the classes only get harder as your advance your education. That is why they have classes with numbers on them.

100 introduction

200 more details

300 more specific to the study

400 your major.

So you will not take English 102 before English 101. English 101 is easier and would give you the tools to do the 102 class.

I took Economics 200, micro and macro. It was hard at the time…then I took Economics 300. It was harder still, but the 200 classes gave me a good background to the 300 course. Will I take Economics 400? No, becuase economics is not my major…business is. So, it was part of the business core, to give me a greater understanding of economics.

You will do fine! your grades were much higher than mine were. so fly birdie…fly.

Go to txstate.edu and read the story about Antonio Banos. He just received an Honor for one of the top 50 minorities in advertising. I know this guy personally and he has done great. I worked with him on the AAF advertising team in 2006 and saw first hand how hard it can be not knowing English that well. He had to present at our competition and we stayed with him for hours making sure he enunciated his words correctly. I believe he may be the first generation also and he has achieved so much. It just takes hard work and dedication. I’m sure you’ll be fine! Don’t let the pressure of being a first deter you off your path. Good luck with everything you know.

I suggest you go to a community college so you can live at home and commute to class. You can transfer to another school after 2 years if you feel you are ready.

It is time for your family to learn English. They need to go to night school or take classes. You won’t always be there to help them so they need to help themselves. You can also tutor them. Insist that everyone speak English at home. Otherwise, they will never learn it. They cannot just depend on you.

I, too, am a first generation American, but my parents were determined to learn English and be a part of this country.

Don;t worry! There are plenty of people out there with WAY worse grades than you! Plenty of people I wwent to college with (I just graduated) finished high school with 2.0 or less, and still went to college and graduated! That you are bilingual, first generation, a great student, and so involved, you should be just fine! Just keep working hard. Hard work= success. You don’t need to be a perfect 4.0 genious, just dedicated and consistent. Relax, you will do fine.

dont worry about your own GPA and your future….its not the end of the world if you dont get into the best of schools. just make the most of what you get.

just make sure you do your best to give your children a decent education so they can make a good life for themselves.
