Can I go to med school if I get my undergrad in mechanical engineering?
I know its possible, but how far behind would i be? What would be good areas to specialize in?

yes you can as long as you have taken the classes for Med school Bio 1and 2,Chem 1 and 2, Physics 1 and 2, and Calculus. You can major in any degree program

As long as you meet the prerequisites for admission (year of calc, year of bio w/lab, year of inorganic chem w/lab, year of organic chem w/lab, year of physics w/lab, plus a good MCAT score and volunteer experience in the medical field), and you are actually admitted into a program, you don’t need to worry about being “far behind”. Those are the prereqs for a reason, you know? Everyone who is admitted knows exactly what a first year med student is supposed to know.
As far as specialization goes, other people have already given you a good idea.

yes you can as long as you have the required science prerequisites done and have a medical experience (ie: medical assistant, emt, pharmacy tech etc.) just make sure to explain to the schools, during interviews, why you are doing a huge switch of majors. and when you go to residency, maybe a good specialization would be orthopedics, but let me tell you that that is very competitive…good luck!

You’d be really far behind missing all the human sciences and many chemistry classes – probaly 1 1/2 – 2 years remedial work, I’d guess….specialise in what interests you – you’ll always be better at something you want to do…me…I’d do gynecolgy…;-)

Most definitely. You might be required to pick-up some biology and physiology requirements.
Specialize in orthopaedic surgery or another area that requires engineered structures.
